NRI was founded in 2001 by the like-minded, visionary owners of 9 independent businesses.
On 28 May 2001, nine independent rural merchandisers united to create NRI Limited, determined to control their own destiny as corporate retailers threatened to dominate the market. A bold idea built on autonomy, simplicity, and shared success.
2002 – 03
- Shareholder numbers tripled to 32 by mid 2002 as word spread fast.
- Publicity campaign begins in Rural Business magazine
- NRI delivered its maiden profit proof that the independent model worked. All suppliers backed the business from the outset.
2004
- All working capital had been repaid in full with interest to the founding shareholders.
- NRI declared its maiden dividend with 50 shareholders on board. Broadacre, Animal Health, and Horticulture Focus Groups were all established, deepening the network’s expertise.
2005
- NRI became completely debt free, delivering a 60% profit rise with strong returns on assets.
- The central procurement desk went operational, giving shareholders the collective buying power to compete with anyone in the market.
2006
- NRI recorded its fifth consecutive year of growth with group turnover increasing 29% and 64 shareholders across the network.
- Dividends based on turnover were introduced, adding another layer of financial return for shareholders.
2008
NRI Purchases Its own office. A significant marker of financial maturity. A clear demonstration of the strength and discipline of the cooperative model and what a united network can achieve.
2014
- NRI reached 110 shareholders, delivering consistent double-digit returns year on year.
- The network’s buying power, supplier relationships, and collaborative model were firmly cementing NRI as the home of independent rural retail in Australia.
2016
- NRI held 13% national market share with over 120 shareholders
- Fifteen consecutive years of uninterrupted growth, a record that speaks for itself.
