Nigel Herring

Chairman

Nigel Herring joined the NRI Board as a Director in March 2022, bringing extensive leadership experience and a deep commitment to farmer-focused research and innovation.

Based in Tamworth, NSW, Nigel is the Chief Executive Officer of AMPS Agribusiness Ltd and AMPS Commercial Pty Ltd, a position he has held for seventeen years. AMPS operates six locations across Northern NSW, serving primarily broadacre cropping markets with a team of 65 staff including nine agronomists. Founded twenty years ago by local farmers with a vision to create a profit centre that could reinvest in locally-based research and value chain opportunities, AMPS annually funds AMPS Research Inc, which employs nine staff focused on independent, practical, and actionable research that enhances profitability and sustainability for regional farmers. Nigel serves as Secretary/Treasurer of AMPS Research Inc.

Nigel’s first exposure to agriculture came through his uncle and aunt’s dairy and beef farm while growing up in Western Victoria, sparking a passion that led him to gain hands-on experience through jackarooing positions on merino, beef cattle, and irrigation properties across NSW. After completing his Bachelor of Applied Science in Agriculture, Nigel began his career as an Agronomist with AGnVET Services in Warren (1993-1996), progressing to Branch Manager/Agronomist (1996-2001), and then Regional/Field Services Manager across Dubbo and Wagga Wagga (2001-2008).

Nigel’s unique combination of technical expertise, cooperative business leadership, and commitment to farmer-focused research provides invaluable strategic insight to the NRI Board. His proven ability to balance commercial success with meaningful industry reinvestment exemplifies the collaborative, sustainable approach that strengthens independent agricultural enterprises and aligns seamlessly with NRI’s mission.
