Michael Brown

Director

Michael Brown joined the NRI Board as a Director in November 2025, bringing three decades of agricultural retail experience and a strong commitment to regional communities in Gippsland.

Based in Sale, Victoria, Michael is the Co-Founder of BrownWigg, which he established with David Wigg in 2005 as an NRI member business. From its foundation in Sale, BrownWigg has grown into a significant regional operation with eight stores throughout Gippsland, serving the beef, dairy, and sheep industries that define the region’s agricultural landscape. Under Michael’s leadership, the business has become known for its comprehensive support of local sporting clubs and community organisations across the area.

Michael’s agricultural career began in 1995 at a CRT store in Sale, Gippsland. When the CRT business was sold to Elders in 2000, he progressed to manage their Bairnsdale store before making the strategic decision to establish his own independent business. Growing up on a family farm in Woodside, Victoria, Michael developed an early understanding of agricultural life that continues to inform his approach today. He and his wife Melanie operate a beef cattle breeding and finishing operation alongside the BrownWigg business, while raising their three children—Sophie, Jonah, and Ellie.

Michael’s dual expertise as both an independent retailer and active cattle producer, combined with his proven ability to build and scale agricultural businesses, provides valuable strategic insight to the NRI Board. As President of Sale FGA, his leadership extends beyond commerce to genuine community stewardship, exemplifying the collaborative values that strengthen NRI’s network of independent agricultural enterprises.
