A Life Rooted in the Land and Growing Toward the Future

How one Victorian farm kid built more than a business, he built a community hub in Goomalling

There’s something about growing up on a farm that stays with you. For Scott Thomson, those early mornings in Dookie, Victoria, watching his parents work the land, weren’t just childhood memories—they were the foundation for everything that came next.

“Agriculture was in my blood,” Scott reflects. “After uni, I had a choice: pursue football or stay local and commit to agriculture. Looking back, it wasn’t really a choice at all.”

The Turning Point

By 2014, Scott had built solid experience across agricultural operations—from managing wheat bins to working his way up through Landmark. But when he partnered with Greg Baird to take on a struggling business in Goomalling, he faced his biggest challenge yet.

The business had potential, but it was weighed down by legal restrictions and unprofitable segments. Many would have walked away. Scott and Greg saw an opportunity.

“We stripped it back to what we did best: agro-chemicals, seeds, and fertilizers. No distractions. Just focusing on serving farmers with exactly what they needed.”

That focused approach? It became Central Ag’s superpower.

The Independence Advantage

What sets Scott’s story apart isn’t just the business turnaround—it’s how he did it. Operating as an independent with NRI’s buying power behind him gave Scott the flexibility to make bold decisions without corporate red tape slowing him down.

Take freight management. While bigger operations were locked into expensive third-party contracts, Scott built an in-house system that saves Central Ag $100,000 annually. Those savings? They go straight back into better service for clients and reinvestment in the business.

The results speak for themselves:

  • 16,000-17,000 tons of fertilizer moved annually
  • Growing year on year with ambitious targets ahead
  • A brand-new $3.5M, 3,000-square-meter workshop that opened in December 2024

But for Scott, success isn’t measured in tonnage alone.

More Than Just Products

Walk into Central Ag and you’ll immediately sense something different. This isn’t just a place to buy agricultural supplies—it’s where the community gathers. River cruises for clients. Christmas parties that everyone actually wants to attend. Footy boxes where farmers and suppliers share a pie and a yarn.

“My team—Lisa, Aimee, David, and Debra-Lee—they’re not just employees. They’re part of what makes this work,” Scott explains. “When you’re independent, you can build that culture. You’re not just following a corporate playbook.”

That personal touch extends beyond the business. Ask anyone in Goomalling about Scott’s lawn, and you’ll get an earful. Immaculate doesn’t begin to cover it. The same attention to detail he brings to his turf? That’s exactly how he approaches every aspect of Central Ag.

Looking Forward

The new facility that opened December 2024 isn’t just a bigger shed—it’s designed for what’s coming next. Drive-through truck access. Modern chemical racking. Mezzanine offices that create space for growth. After a successful launch in December, the grand opening celebration is planned for February.

Scott’s already working on the next phase: additional agronomists, new service offerings like hydraulic repairs and pool water testing, and deeper specialization in broadacre cropping, particularly GM canola and Clearfield varieties.

“Having NRI’s buying power means I can compete with anyone on pricing. But being independent means I can move fast, make decisions that are right for my clients, and build the business the way it should be built—around relationships, not just transactions.”

The Real Success Story

Ask Scott what he’s most proud of, and he won’t mention the impressive new facility or the growth trajectory. He’ll talk about trust—the farmers who rely on Central Ag, the suppliers who’ve become partners, and the team that shows up every day believing in what they’re building together.

From those early days on his family’s farm in Victoria to leading a thriving operation in Goomalling, Scott’s journey proves something important: you don’t have to choose between independence and backing. With the right structure, you get both.

And that changes everything.

Central Ag is a proud NRI shareholder, combining the buying power of a national group with the agility and personal service of an independent business.
